About FormatLab
Fast, accessible image and document tools designed from the ground up to respect your privacy.
Our Mission and Why We Built This
Every day, millions of people need to convert a photo format, compress an image to meet an online form threshold, or merge PDF documents for school, visa, or job applications. Unfortunately, many conventional online conversion websites require uploading your personal files to third party remote servers. This introduces real privacy vulnerabilities, potential storage leaks, and unnecessary bandwidth delays.
FormatLab was created by The FormatLab Team to provide a safe, modern alternative. By utilizing modern web standards such as WebAssembly, Web Workers, the HTML5 Canvas API, and client side cryptographic tools, our tools execute all processing tasks directly on your local device. Your files never travel across the internet.
How Client-Side Processing Works
When you select a file or drop it into one of our tools, your browser loads the file directly into local memory. For image conversions and compressions, your device decodes the pixel data and re-encodes it locally. For PDF operations like merging and splitting, the document streams are assembled locally using open source JavaScript engines.
Because no data leaves your browser, processing speeds are limited only by your device hardware, not your network upload speed. Once you finish downloading your converted file or close the browser tab, the temporary memory is automatically released.
Core Operating Principles
- Strict Local Privacy: Zero uploads, zero tracking of file names, and zero remote storage.
- No Registration Walls: Every single tool is completely free to use without requiring an account or email address.
- Transparent Output: No watermarks, no artificial quality degradation, and honest reporting of size changes.
Open Source Credits & Architecture
FormatLab is built upon trusted open source libraries created by the global developer community. We gratefully acknowledge:
- pdf-lib: Document creation and page manipulation in pure JavaScript.
- fflate: High speed client side compression and ZIP archive generation.
- browser-image-compression: Efficient canvas-based iterative image compression.
- heic-to: In-browser HEIC and HEIF decoding to standard formats.
- Next.js & React: High performance modern web application framework.
Funding and Sustainability
FormatLab is currently completely free and ad-free, maintained as an independent utility for the global community.
